Eating on a banana leaf is a tradition in the South Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Several states in south have a custom of serving food on banana leaves.

Every member of the family sits down on the ground and eats together with their right hand and not with spoon. Eating on a banana leave is a practice followed by the ancestors, a thousand years back.
