6 Unusual Temples in India

Hindus with their 33 Crore Gods, Goddesses and demigods have thousands of temples & shrines across the country. Some of them are immersed in deep mysticism with a folklore attached to their origin. The traditions followed at these unusual temples of India are peculiar and may seem strange to the outsiders.

Then there are temples which are not dedicated to an immortal God at all. In India mass fan followers dedicate temples to celebrities, politicians and army men.

  1. Sonia Gandhi Temple, Telangana

This temple has been constructed by Congress Leaders of the state to honor their party president, Sonia Gandhi.  Her idol stands tall with a sapling in one hand and a basket of fruit in another. Portraits of other members from this illustrious family are also on display here.

This temple is a way of showing gratitude to Gandhi for being instrumental in creation of the new & separate Telangana state.

  1. Rajnikanth Temple, Karnataka

It’s no surprise that the Tamil Megastar has a lingam dedicated to his name in the Kotilingeshwara temple in Karnataka. This lingam was properly consecrated by chanting of Vedic mantras and prayers. His fans down south have gone to the extent of shaving their heads when the superstar fell ill & underwent treatment in Singapore.

  1. Aeroplane Gurdwara, Jalandhar

Those afflicted with the travel bug throng this Gurudwara and offer a miniature model of aeroplane in hopes of travelling to their dream destination. Looking at the number of Sikhs settled in Canada, New York, London and other places in the West it seems the magic of Baba Shaheed Nihal Singh works.

Sachin Tendulkar has had an impressive cricket career and in this cricket crazy nation he enjoys a massive fan following. Manoj Tiwari, the famous Bhojpuri actor has dedicated a life size idol to pay homage to Little Master.

  1. Baba Jaswant Singh Temple, Tawang

The shrine of Baba Jaswant Singh has an interesting story attached to it. Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat was a martyr from the time of Sino-Indian war. After his death, the apparition of the heroic rifleman is still believed to protect the Eastern frontiers of India with China. He has been promoted to the rank of Major General posthumously, the only Indian army man to have risen through the ranks after his death.

  1. Amitabh Bachchan Temple, South Kolkata

After Rajnikant the second biggest star of the country is undisputedly Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. His fans have gone a step further a written ‘Amitabh Chalisa’ in his honor. There is also a chair from the movie ‘Aks’ on which sits the photograph and shoes of the SHEHANSHAH of Bollywood
